Ice splashes his fingers, rimes his skin from nail to wrist, and hollows clean every thin crease. In the porcelain sink he rinses off his ashes in clouds, rinses scars fresh in bloody flecks, rinses and rinses until the water dims and its gathering grey circles the drain. They're no younger when he pulls them out, his hands: still the same knuckles and ropy veins, but he shakes off each drop—thinks as he does that maybe there's an echo in the movement after all: a pull from a distant piano's ringing.
